Jamie Rodriguez Captures Shakira in South Florida at the Sold-Out BB&T Center
Why is Shakira still around? It’s a valid question as we stand at a sold-out BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida in her first concert performance since her maternity break that began in 2010. For those of us Colombians who have grown up with her since the mid-’90s, it’s a question worth pondering. What is her secret to longevity and long-lasting success? The answer is reinvention. She always reinvents herself and is in lockstep with the current movement of music.
As a savvy latin and pop music fan, as well as a concert photographer, I have seen Shakira pave the way for the current success of Luis Fonsi and her fellow Colombians Ja Balvin and Maluma. Back in the early 2000’s, Shakira was one of the first Latin artists to crossover, from Spanish to English into North America.
Judging from the 16,000 screaming souls watching her perform live at the BB&T Center in South Florida, Shakira still has the goods to put on an entertaining and inspirational performance. While it is worth mentioning that there is a lack of cohesiveness to her setlist that is noticeable, despite this, her deep cuts sound as good as ever. She does, however, have as much energy as ever, and this bodes well for many years to come. Overall, I enjoyed photographing her performance in Sunrise and capturing many of the latin and pop music fans at her concert.
